Handcrafted and Turned from New Zealand Native Timber.

We display here a selection of   "usable art" fashioned from New Zealand Kauri and other timbers.

These individually hand turned pens or bowls, vases or clocks, are sources of conversation, and pride for years and years to come.

The wide open deep blue sea, guarding the  mouth of a clear tidal river with it's sandy beaches running up to the lush and green native forest, was the scene that Robin George Solomon was awakened to in his early childhood.

Brought up on the shores of the Ngunguru River in Northland New Zealand he soon came to love the outdoors,  with it's abundant Plant, Fish and Bird life.  His father was a Kauri Bushman, so it is little wonder that Robin came to also love the Native Bush, as much as the river and sea shore.

From these early days, the Kauri tree, an icon of New Zealand, has always held a special place in Robin's heart.

In the early days, before his time, but during his father's young life, the Kauri was extensively cut down and milled. So extensively milled, that it came close to extinction, and has now become protected against axe and saw.

The only Kauri timber available today is the old remains of early millings, stumps that were left behind by Bushmen of those times, and the mighty trees that had been buried alive hundreds of years ago, by the "Natural Catastrophes" that made New Zealand what it is now.

These buried trees, slowly - over hundreds of years -  rise, toward the surface and are sometimes found and dug from the earth to be turned into items of magnificent beauty.

PenBill.gif (4379 bytes) Robin was captivated by the colours and patterns that were exposed when he first turned the Kauri wood. He says there are no set rules for turning this timber, as the original shape and form of a piece of wood holds it's own inner spirit and will lead him to discover the beauty within.

Robin now gives you, through displaying his art form, the opportunity to share the warmth and heritage of this magnificent timber.
